I Heart Art: Holi

May 18, 2012 | Art, Video

Since seeing this video, I’ve made a vow to myself that while I’m living in South East Asia, I must must get to India to celebrate the Holi Festival of Colours. I have heard of it before and thought that I really should get there to see it sometime, but now.. it’s an absolute must. Just watch this gem of a video.. I think you’ll understand why.

I can’t actually stop watching.. it puts such a smile on my face :)

I know this isn’t the usual ‘I heart art’ but I think you’ll agree that this video is a piece of art.. and I’m really hearting it. It was shot by Jonathan Bregel and Khalid Mohtaseb for Variable. Found on Colossal.

I Heart Art: Cinemagraphs

April 13, 2012 | Art

So, once or twice I’ve had a go at creating gifs. I like the idea of taking a series of images and putting them together to create movement.. and normally they end up really grainy and jerky, but kinda fun.

Never in my wildest dreams could I have ever thought gifs could look this incredible. They are called Cinemagraphs, and are created by Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg. Amazing or what?!

I could just watch these all day.. they go on forever and ever :)

I Heart Art: Fingerprints

March 26, 2012 | Art

Hi all, it’s Donaville from Discover Paper and today I wanted to share something for the kids – fingerprint guestbooks!

Fingerprint guestbooks seem to have been quite a craze for the past few years, and it’s no wonder why: it’s a really great way to leave a lasting impression! I’ve seen fingerprint trees a’plenty around the blogosphere, namely for weddings, but fingerprint pirate ships, elephants, and airplanes? I hadn’t heard of those until I stumbled across Bianca Hewson’s shop on Etsy. Bianca’s taken a popular idea and expanded it beyond the wedding scene, making birthdays and other events all the more memorable and fun. It’s DIY artwork!

I Heart Art: Art in Arithmetic

March 12, 2012 | Art

Hello everyone, it’s Donaville from Discover Paper and I recently happened upon Alan S. Lu’s “Voussoir Cloud”, a 3 dimensional structural tessellation created from laser-cut ultra-light materials.

Math wasn’t my strong-suit in school. I’ve always been more of a right-brained individual drawn to the Arts, but I did find geometry to be one of the most enjoyable classes I had ever taken. What I remembered most was learning how to create tessellations and being introduced to the work of the infinitely talented artist, M. C. Escher, who I deemed the father of tessellations. I think Escher and other like-minded individuals would appreciate Alan S. Lu’s work.
