Make Art That Sells – Week 3

November 26, 2015 | Design, Make Art That Sells, Personal

Oops, I’m a little behind in my MATS recaps! Last week was actually week 5, which was the last week of the course.. big sad face. But I won’t jump ahead yet (though if you’re following me on Instagram you’ll have had a peek!).

Week 3 was all about children’s book illustration. Probably not a market I really see myself in I must admit, but worth giving it a go anyway, right! We were first tasked with drawing lost of cats and creating cat characters, before being given the big assignment to either illustrate the cover, or one spread of the story The White Cat.

I had a bit of shaky start to my cat illustrations, trying to work out how a cat really looks.. but then when I made it more human like, I really got into it! I thought it was so fun sketching her facial expressions and trying different shapes and sizes for her features.

Sketching cats! By fellow fellow :)

I eventually settled on the middle-bottom one. I thought she had a nice personality :) Next onto the cover..

The story is about a white cat and a prince, and the prince rides a wooden horse.. it’s a really bazaar story actually, pretty dark and creepy, so I opted to put a lighter, more fun spin on the cover. Why not, it’s for kids after all!

Here’s what I ended up with.. I think there are a few things I’d like to keep working on, but overall I was happy I managed to complete it :)

There was such a massive variety of designs that were submitted, all so different, and quite a number that really stood out as incredible to me. There’s some serious talent in this class!

If I’m honest, I’m actually finding it very difficult not to compare my work to everyone else’s! There are so many wonderful illustrators that sometimes I can’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed.. BUT I’m also really proud of myself for getting through each task as it comes and creating great work even if I’m initially stumped by the idea. I’m proving to myself that I can do it, and that’s worth a lot I reckon :)

A Lovely Lettered Invitation

November 12, 2012 | Design, Personal

Hi guys, happy Monday!

I’m currently still in Perth, recovering from an incredible wedding over the weekend! It was our dear friends Aude and Martin’s big day, and I was lucky enough to design their invitations a little while back! So I just wanted to drop in and show you the results, now that the wedding is over.

Aude is Swiss, and Martin is Australian.. so the right-hand side of the invitation was in French, and the left in English. They had the invites letterpressed, which turned out beautifully!

And what a day the wedding was.. ahhh. Can’t wait to share some pictures! :)

Weekend that was (15-16.09.12)

September 17, 2012 | Weekend that was

Happy Monday! How was everyone’s weekend?

Mine was a super quiet one! On Friday I caught up with a friend for lunch, had a quick wander of the shops, and spent the afternoon watching a movie which was lovely! I then spent the rest of the weekend catching up on some work and flicking through my new Pantone swatch book :)

And last but not least, I was given the really cute cardboard clock above by hubby after he got back from a work trip to Taiwan last night.. isn’t it lovely?! I’m one lucky gal :)

Loving… Brent Couchman

March 5, 2012 | Loving...

Hello hello, it’s Donaville from Discover Paper. My day job, is a creative director/web designer and one of the places I often look to for inspiration whenever I come across a design block is Dribbble. It’s a network of graphic designers who upload and share shots (or screenshots) of their works in progress. One of my favorite designers’ work to peruse is that of Brent Couchman , whose work I first came across through his dribbble account.

Having worked with clients like Fossil and Comerica, Brent’s style is timeless, blending modern and retro illustrations in a fun and eye-catchy way. He has a unique ability to refashion something ordinary into something extraordinary.
